Stepping Up to the Challenge
Due to the growing need for Lutheran theological education among Hispanics in the U.S, the Center for Hispanic Studies (CHS)—formerly known as the Hispanic Institute of Theology—was established in 1987. Given that Latinos currently comprise the fastest-growing ethnic group in the nation, the main mission of CHS, now more than ever, is to form the future Hispanic lay leaders, commissioned deaconesses, and ordained ministers of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Instruction is carried out in Spanish and considers the rich diversity of Hispanic cultural contexts in its theological and pastoral reflection. The Center delivers instruction through theological education by extension, part-time residential opportunities, and computer-based systems. Seminary level students can benefit from electives in the areas of missional leadership, family counseling, and theology and culture.

2008-2009 CHS Tuition Rates:
I. Sem-Level Tuition (pastoral and deaconess tracks) per credit hour: $500
Intensive Week Fly-In Program* (per year): $2,550
Vicarage Fee: $579 (paid over 3-year period of the program)
*This amount includes plane tickets, transportation to and from the airport, meals, lodging, and materials for intensive weeks in St. Louis (or another site). The amount varies in cases when a student drives to St. Louis, an instructor flies to a District site, or a course is taught via the Internet.
II. Entrance-Level Program per course (credit): $65
Entrance-Level Program per course (non-credit): $30
Concordia Seminary, Districts, congregations, and students work together to make theological education in Spanish through CHS affordable.

Regional Coordinators and District Partners

Our Regional Coordinators and District Partners are passionate about forming and equipping Hispanic laity to serve their local churches and communities.
Lay leaders work, for example, as Sunday school teachers, Bible study leaders, assistant liturgists, as well as in works of mercy and the task of sharing the Gospel with others.
Coordinators and partners use the Entrance Level curriculum of CHS and other forms of instruction that serve local needs.
Upon completion of the Entrance Level, lay workers who have been identified by their Districts to receive further preparation towards certification as pastors or deaconesses of the LCMS continue on to CHS Seminary Level studies at Concordia for their formation.

SEMINARY LEVEL (Deaconess Certification)
|

In 2002, a deaconess studies program was initiated by Concordia Seminary. At the same time, plans were undertaken to develop a non-degree deaconess studies program in the Spanish language through the Center for Hispanic Studies. The Center now offers a course of studies unique for Latinas. The student must complete 17 courses, which include some courses taken alongside men preparing for the pastoral ministry and others specific to deaconess formation. The process for assigning an internship to deaconess students and for placing deaconess candidates into their office will be carried out in a manner similar to vicarage assignment and final placement of pastoral candidates.

Entrance Level
|

ENTRANCE (CONGREGATIONAL) LEVEL
This level includes 10 courses whose overall objective is to provide the student with a foundational understanding of the Christian faith and the centrality of the Gospel in Lutheran theology. Each course contains lessons in DVD- or video-format sessions, as well as accompanying manuals and textbooks. Although each lesson is taught in Spanish, certain courses have English subtitles. In such courses, the student is able to choose a study manual in either Spanish or English. The Entrance Level helps students acquire good and fruitful study habits, which often foster interest in further studies at the Seminary Level. Students who finish the 10 courses receive a certificate that will enable them, if so desired, to be considered and recognized as lay workers in the church.
Entrance Level Requirements
1. Complete an application to the Entrance Level.
2. Be a member of the Lutheran Church for at least one year.
3. Use primarily Spanish in daily life, or work and live among Spanish-speaking peoples.
4. Be an active member in the local congregation.
5. Present a letter of recommendation from the pastor of the congregation.
6. Completion of high school or its equivalent, and preferably some university studies.
7. Read, speak, and write Spanish.

Master of Arts

Master of Arts
PURPOSE
The purpose of studying for the degree of Master of Arts (M.A.) is to acquire a general competence in Biblical and doctrinal theology, including a major in one area of theology. A student who completes the M.A. program may apply for admission either to the S.T.M. or to the Ph.D. program.
The Master of Arts is designed for both clergy and laity. It is especially helpful for Christian men and women who seek to further their knowledge of theology, so that they may give appropriate leadership in their congregations and communities. M.A. students choose a major and minor from the following three options: historical theology, practical theology, and systematic theology. The students also will have the opportunity to take additional courses outside of the major and minor areas.

CHS formation programs are especially designed for Spanish-dominant and/or bilingual Latinos/as who have been identified as leaders in and by the local church and expect to be working in a variety of U.S. Hispanic/Latino contexts where the use of Spanish remains a critical missional component.
